Lectors & Commentators Guild

 

LECTORS AND COMMENTATORS GUILD (LCG)

The Lectors and Commentators Guild or LCG's was created to bring together capable and qualified Catholics to help, assist or render services as lectors, commentators, and cantors in the liturgical celebration or activities of the Church of St. John Bosco as well as other services or activities as may be duly authorized or delegated by the Parish Priest.

A LECTOR is a person instituted to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel.  He may also announce the intentions for the Prayer of the Faithful and, in the absence of a psalmist, proclaim the Psalm between the readings. (GIRM, 99)

A COMMENTATOR provides the faithful, when appropriate, brief explanations and commentaries with the purpose of introducing them to the celebration and preparing them to understand it better.  (GIRM, 105b)

QUALIFICATIONS OF LECTORS AND COMMENTATORS
(Based on the Guidelines and By-Laws for Lectors and Commentators given by the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission)

This ministry is given to all lay faithful, who are:

  1. good Catholics in faith and deed;

  2. willing to commit themselves to perform the duties and responsibilities as Lectors and Commentators especially the proclamation of the Word in the liturgical celebrations;

  3. willing to grow spiritually through this ministry;

  4. proficient both in English and Filipino languages and must have an above average public oral communication skills;

  5. physically and mentally fit;

  6. at least 16 years of age and not more than 70 years of age; (However when the candidates are younger or older from the ages indicated, it is the prerogative of the parish priest to determine the suitability and ability of the candidates to the ministry based on the evaluation and recommendation of the screening committee.)

    Note:  Children cannot be commissioned for this ministry.  They can be requested to proclaim the Word of God for special liturgical celebrations but not on a permanent basis.

     

  7. recommended by the parish priest or chaplain or spiritual director or rector after having passed the test of the screening committee:

    1. The candidates must submit to the screening committee:

      1. (For single) Baptismal and Confirmation certificates

      2. (For married) Church wedding certificate

    2. The candidates must undergo a scrutiny about their knowledge of the Catholic faith, particularly of the sacraments.

    3. The candidates must prove their availability for the liturgical celebrations.
